 Summary of The Necklace

Matilda Loisel was a young, fine, pretty lady who was urged to live a fancy life full of materialistic expensive things such as jewels and clothes of the riches. But, unfortunately, she was married to a clerk who worked in the office of the Board of Education. And his economical husband could not afford all the riches she wished for. She was a simple woman but an unhappy one.

One fine day, her husband got a large envelope with him as he returned from his office. It was an invitation to a ball by the minister of education and only chosen employees along with their families were called to the occasion. Mr. Loisel thought this invitation would excite her wife but instead, she became upset and started crying. On asking about the matter, she uttered that she did not have a fine dress to wear to the occasion and hence he should give the invitation to another colleague.

He was quite upset about seeing her wife in such a pity situation and asked her what amount would she need to buy a fine dress for the occasion. After thinking a lot, she replied that she wasn’t sure but 40 Francs might be enough. The clerk got a pale face as he had saved exactly the amount for buying a gun to join his friends to go on the shoot. However, without even a second thought he gave the money asked to his wife. She bought a lovely dress for the ball.

As the day of the event was approaching, Mr Loisel noticed that her wife was upset again. On asking, she replied that does not have fine jewels to wear for the occasion and hence does not want to go to the party. Her husband asked her to wear original flowers as they looked chic at that time of the year. But she was not convinced with the idea. Then, Mr. Loisel suggested she get one from her friend, Mme Frostier (Jeanne). The next day, she went to her friend and chose a beautiful diamond necklace placed in a black satin box.

They went to the ball and Mme Loisel was quite happy as she looked the prettiest and everyone admired her and danced with her. She kept enjoying the ball till 4 in the morning and her husband was half asleep in a nearby salon with other mates whose wives were enjoying themselves. When she arrived, he offered her a coat to protect her from the winter and told her that he would call a cab. But, seeing other ladies wear expensive Paris coats she did not wait and asked her husband to move. After quite a trouble, they finally got a vehicle to reach home.

After reaching home, she wanted to have a last look at herself since everything was over now and she found that the necklace was missing. Mr. Loisel went to the tracks they were walking on and returned at about 7 in the morning but with nothing. Both of them decided to give a similar necklace to Mme Frostier and started collecting money from known people. They were burdened with a heavy amount of loans.

They found the exact same necklace and Matilda returned it to her. Both of them worked very hard for the next 10 years to repay the loan but they finally did it. One fine day, as she was walking on the road to perform her daily chores, she saw Mme Frostier and now that she had repaid the loan and was content, she decided to tell her everything. She went to her and greeted her but was not recognized by the lady. She said that she was Matilda and Jeanne said that she had become slightly old and was unrecognizable.

Matilda told her about the miseries that she had faced in the past ten years and the huge amount of 35000 Francs that she had to pay for her necklace. Mme Frostier was shocked and told her that the necklace she had given her was worth 500 Francs only.
